Deuterium gas is used in the manufacturing of silicon semiconductors and microchips. The application is based on printed circuit boards through a deuterium-protium exchange. This process prevents chemical erosion of the chip circuit and extends the life cycle of semiconductors and microchips.
Another application is the stabilization of organic molecules in OLED screens. The corresponding process is based on selective labeling with Deuterium or an unselective deuterium-protium exchange. Because the isotope effect leads to stronger bonds, the molecules can have a significantly longer lifespan.
