Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and
Elastomers (CASE)

Zeochem’s Purmol powders are excellent moisture scavengers for polyurethane coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers. Purmol adsorbents are synthetic zeolites in powder form with a complex alkali aluminosilicate structure. This structure is very open and contains pores of a regular and precisely defined size. This allows Zeochem Purmol powders to adsorb molecules selectively based on molecular size and polarity. In practice, Purmol powder adsorbs water, but not solvents, resins or pigments. Its powder form allows for easy incorporation.

The Purmol product line has a wide variety of uses. While many current applications are based on polyurethane and other plastics, Purmol powders can be used in numerous formulations where selective adsorption of small polar molecules is required within a liquid or solid medium. Its fine particle size ensures intimate mixing and excellent dispersion.

In each of the following applications, Purmol powder is a vital component of a top-quality formulation.

Applications

Polyurethanes are formed by the reaction between isocyanates and polyols. Any trace amount of water will react with the isocyanate component to form CO2 gas (foaming). This reaction results in bubbling, which is undesirable in many coating applications. Purmol powder will adsorb water without interacting with solvents or other components, thus eliminating CO2 formation and resulting in a smooth final product surface.

One- and two-component (1K & 2K) polyurethane coatings, adhesives and sealants:

Used in numerous applications such as:

  • Construction coatings
    • Wood-flooring protective coatings and adhesive backings
    • Liquid-applied roofing
    • Self-leveling floor coating
    • Concrete re-surfacing
    • UV resistant coatings
    • Wood putty
    • Sports hall flooring
    • Industrial floors
    • Decorative floors
  • Underground cable protection
  • Truck bed liners
  • Transportation industry products
    • Railroad repair compound – re-spiking
    • High-quality traffic paint – neon paint
  • Artificial turf grass (adhesive)
  • Carpet tiles (adhesive)
  • Edge sealants
  • Pipeline coating
  • Industrial coatings
    • Cranes

    • 2K polyurethane varnishes
    • 2K polyurethane enamel
    • 2K semi-flat polyurethane base coat
    • 2K high-gloss polyurethane top coat
    • 2K polyurethane primer
  • PUR/epoxy – resins for electrical insulation applications.
    • Casting (potting) compounds are easy-to-process liquid 2K polyurethane systems for the solid electrical insulation industry.

And many, many more. Contact us if you feel Purmol powders would be beneficial in your application formulation.

Aluminum paints and zinc-rich primers are susceptible to moisture attraction along with any other pigments or fillers used. Purmol adsorbents act as a desiccant to help ensure formulation consistency performance for these applications.

Purmol adsorbent formulations are used in steel rust prevention on bridges and other essential steel structures.

Used in many of the above applications listed in the “One- and two-component (1K & 2K) polyurethane coatings, adhesives and sealants” section but for the polysulfide and silicone system variants. These are used heavily in the construction industry as adhesives and sealants.

Purmol powder is used in the polyurethane foams industry as a limited additive to help control CO2 gas formation. It can be used to reduce the amount of foaming for applications requiring a more controlled foaming reaction.

Purmol powder is used in both the rigid and flexible PU foam markets.

Purmol powders are used in the manufacture of various types of rubber compounds to control the presence of water during blending and curing.

They are used in the following elastomer applications and industries:

  • Insulated Glass (IG)
    • Found in flexible spacers for the IG industry as a desiccant-loaded elastomer between window panes to prevent condensation build up on the glass. This technology promotes a healthy (mold prevention) and energy-efficient (climate containment) living environment. This technology will also prolong the life of the windows and sealants, keeping them in place as moisture will not build-up on the windows or sealants.
  • EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) rubber roofing
  • Rubber running tracks – indoor and outdoor
  • Thermoset elastomers in the motor vehicle industry
  • Medical industry
    • Chemically resistant silicone molds
  • Consumer goods
    • Shoe soles
    • PU-based clothing and neoprene
  • Electrical industry
    • Elastomers can be used to cover wires and cables, providing both insulation and heat resistance.

And many, many more. Contact us if you feel Purmol powder would be beneficial in your application formulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Purmol products are manufactured at our production facility in Zvornik, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The MOQ is 1x full pallet, 600kg (30x 20kg)

Water reacts with active metallic pigments such as zinc or aluminum, forming hydrogen that leads to an overpressure in the cans.

Zn + 2H2O → Zn(OH)2 + H2

2Al + 6H2O → 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2

Our molecular sieves may be added at any time during the blending of the primer by rapid stirring in conjunction with the addition of the zinc dust. Zeochem recommends the addition of 1% – 3% Purmol powder.

Zeochem offers 3A molecular sieve powder Purmol 3ST and 4A molecular sieve powder Purmol 4ST.

Purmol is an excellent moisture scavenger for polyurethanes, zinc rich primers, aluminum-pigmented coatings, and polysulfide systems. Purmol is also used in applications where sequestration of residual moisture is essential, such as warm-edge spacers used in insulated glass and in packaging applications where even small amounts of moisture can degrade or shorten the shelf life of a product.

Purmol 3ST is available in 90kg drums, 105kg drums, 20kg valve sacks (600kg/pallet), 480kg big bags.Purmol 4ST is available in 20kg valve sacks (600kg/pallet).

The D(50) for Purmol 4ST is 3.3um (D(90)=6.1um) The D(50) for Purmol 3ST is 3.5um (D(90)=6.0um)

Purmol powder in one-component systems should be added prior to the addition of the prepolymer. In two-component systems, we recommend the addition of 2.5 wt% – 5 wt% Purmol powder to the polyol component. This must be stirred thoroughly to allow time for the Purmol powder to adsorb the water before the addition of the isocyanate.

Purmol adsorbents are synthetic zeolites in powder form with a complex alkali aluminosilicate structure. This structure is very open in nature and contains pores of a regular and precisely defined size. This allows for a selective adsorption of molecules based on molecular size and polarity.

Purmol 3ST powder is a potassium (K) type A zeolite with a pore size of approximately 3 Ångstroms (0.32 nm). Purmol 4ST powder is a Sodium (Na) type A zeolite with a pore size of approximately 4 Ångstroms (0.4 nm). Both are excellent moisture scavengers, with Purmol 3ST being more exclusive to moisture adsorption. Purmol 4ST combines high adsorption capacity for water and slightly larger molecules, such as CO2 and smaller hydrocarbons.
